A Sanctuary For A Fresh Start

This project was very near and dear to me because I’ve known the client most of my life. Her daughters and I grew up together and did children’s theater for years. I had countless pizza parties in the living room and had my first voice lesson in the music room! Through the years, the children grew up and moved out and when her husband sadly passed away 5 years ago, the house had become stuck in a rut. She needed a former family home to function as a space that was dedicated just to her.

That’s where me and Kat at DwellNuvo Properties came in! What started as a kitchen reno turned into an entire house remodel and the change was astounding. Our client is an accomplished musician and painter. We wanted to curate a space that would foster creativity and order.

Together, we narrowed in on her style: a little Victorian, a lot of European cottage influence and a touch of artistic whimsy. Dark floors were replaced with light European oak. A shadowy and outdated slider door was swapped out for a 11 ft French door, allowing the sun to pour into this beautifully appointed living room. The lowered ceilings were removed and the stunning wood slatted ceiling became a breathtaking focal as soon as you enter the space.

I created an inspiring art corner to keep her passion right in the forefront so that the function of the main space was unique to her needs. The kitchen was streamlined to display her treasured goods and also encourage healthy living. A clean kitchen makes me want to make yummy foods! The bedroom got the special treatment with more French doors for air and light and an antique side table. An ultra precious “dressing corner” adds a space to make her feel special while getting ready to go. And finally the bathroom. These zellige tiles did all the work in this transformation. It’s a perfect way to add old world texture and variation in an incredibly modern way. Total showstopper!

I was so pleased to hand back the keys to this inspiring client and let her start her new life as the woman of the house!
